How to keep baby cool in summer
5 Ways to Keep Your Baby Safe in the Summer
Summer with a baby can be lovely — longer days, first paddles, and time outdoors as a family. But it also means being extra mindful about heat, sun exposure, and how our little ones cope with warmer weather.
Here are five gentle reminders to help keep your baby safe and comfortable this summer:
1. Keep Out of Direct Sunlight
Babies have very delicate skin. The NHS advises that babies under six months should be kept completely out of direct sunlight, as their skin doesn’t yet have enough melanin to protect them. For older babies and toddlers, try to avoid the strongest sun between 11am and 3pm and stick to shaded spots when you're out and about.
2. Dress Lightly and Thoughtfully
Choose light, breathable fabrics like cotton or bamboo. Babies don’t need as many layers as we sometimes think — one more than you’re wearing is usually enough. If you’re unsure, gently check the back of their neck to see if they feel too warm.
3. Use Sunscreen from 6 Months Onward
For babies over six months, you can apply a baby-safe sunscreen (at least SPF 30 and with both UVA and UVB protection). Focus on areas that can’t be covered by clothing, like hands, face, and feet. Reapply as needed — especially if water play is involved.
4. Pram Naps: Keep Them Cool and Covered — Safely
Avoid covering a pram with a blanket or muslin — even light ones can trap heat and reduce airflow. Instead, use something purpose-made like SnoozeShade, which is designed with EziBreez™ mesh that’s better than breathable and blocks up to 99% of UV rays. It’s a simple way to help your baby nap safely and stay shaded when you're on the go.
5. Build In Cool-Down Breaks
Even short periods in the heat can feel intense for little ones. Look for shade, take regular breaks, and have a small handheld fan or cool cloth to hand. If you’re at home or in a garden, a bit of gentle water play in a shaded paddling pool can help toddlers and preschoolers stay cool and enjoy themselves.
Little changes can make a big difference. With some planning and the right kit, summer can be a safe and enjoyable season for you and your baby, toddler, or preschooler.
☀️ Wishing you safe, sunny days ahead.
