You Wouldn’t Let Your Baby Chew a Dishwasher Tablet… So Why Let Them Chew on Hidden Toxins?

As parents, we’re constantly making decisions to keep our babies safe—whether that’s baby-proofing the house, researching car seats, or checking food labels. But there’s one area that often gets overlooked: what our babies put in their mouths.

Because let’s be real—everything ends up in their mouth at some point, right?

In a recent video we shared on Instagram, we started with a bold question:

“You wouldn’t let your baby chew a dishwasher tablet… so why would you let them chew on something that could contain toxic chemicals like BPA?”

The Hidden Danger in Baby Products

Some products that look totally safe on the outside could be hiding harmful chemicals on the inside. One of the biggest culprits? BPA, or Bisphenol A.

BPA is a chemical that was once commonly used in plastics, including baby bottles, teething toys, and feeding products. But research has linked BPA to:

  • Hormone disruption

  • Developmental issues

  • Possible effects on the brain, prostate gland, and behaviour in infants

Most reputable baby brands have moved away from BPA—but not all of them. And many unregulated products on online marketplaces might not meet the strict safety testing standards that your baby deserves.

You Wouldn’t Let Your Baby Chew On…

In the video, we held up a dishwasher tablet as an example—because it looks like a sweet, but is obviously dangerous. Here are a few more things you’d never want your baby to chew on:

  • Bleach or cleaning product lids

  • Batteries (especially button batteries!)

  • Cigarettes

  • Nail polish or remover

  • Paint or glue

  • Sharp utensils

  • Pet chews or adult medication

But here’s the thing—dangerous doesn’t always look dangerous. And that’s the point.

Just because a teether or toy looks cute or colourful doesn’t mean it’s been safety tested. Some baby products are cheaply made with no real thought for what’s inside—and that’s terrifying.

How Gummee Does It Differently

At Gummee, we’re mums and dads first, and product creators second. That’s why every single product we make is:

  • BPA-free

  • Tested to UK & EU safety standards

  • Designed by real parents who care deeply about what goes into our babies’ mouths

We started Gummee to make teething safer—and we’ve never wavered from that mission.
